At Artistic Smiles, we utilize the most advanced technology available to deliver high-quality care to our patients. In addition to our modern diagnostic technology, we can place same-day crowns with our on-site milling machine. In the past, receiving a crown took a minimum of two appointments. This is because dental crowns were typically made off-site in a dental laboratory. Fortunately, our patients can receive a custom, permanent restoration in just one visit to our practice.
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. This system allows for the milling of custom restorations and cosmetic enhancements without the need for off-site fabrication in a dental laboratory. CEREC utilizes CAD/CAM technology, which is computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. Simply put, computer software will help determine the unique specifications needed to mill a custom made crown in our office. Computer software will use the results of digital impressions such as digital X-rays and CT scans to generate the measurements needed for a patient’s restoration. Once the specifications are set, the crown will then be milled from high-quality blocks of ceramic, which are available in a variety of tooth-colored shades of white. The milling process is comparable to that of a 3D printer. Other restorations such as onlays, inlays, and veneers may be made with CAD/CAM technology.
Benefits of CEREC Crowns
CEREC crowns are advantageous because of their convenience to patients and the fact that they make for very natural looking restorations. Our patients appreciate the reduction in waiting time between their first appointment and the second appointment where the finished crown is sent back from the lab. CEREC makes working with our patients’ hectic schedules much easier. Additionally, the ceramic blocks from which the restorations are milled produce very lifelike crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers. Like teeth, ceramics come in many white shades and reflect light. Ceramic is also beneficial because it is very resistant to staining and wear. This means that our patients can enjoy their CEREC crowns for years to come.
