Achieving and preserving oral health begins with a commitment to receiving regular professional care. Checkups and cleanings are vital to preventing common dental diseases and providing conservative treatment before potential problems advance into more problematic conditions.
During checkups, Dr. Gonzalez performs a thorough physical examination and utilizes diagnostics to evaluate the health of the entire oral cavity, including the jawbones, gums, and all structures of teeth. Beyond looking for common issues like dental caries and gum disease, our team will also screen patients for oral cancer and TMJ disorder.
Cleanings are important, too. When we brush and floss our teeth, some harmful substances get left behind and eventually buildup along the gum line. This is why self-care is not enough to keep teeth free of tartar. Cleanings involve removing all of these harmful substances with special handheld tools. Since our dental hygienists examine teeth and gums so closely, we can detect signs of periodontal (gum) disease and thinning of tooth enamel. We can also determine if you are practicing proper oral hygiene. If your brushing and flossing falls short, our team can give recommendations for improving it.
Having dental phobias is not uncommon and we understand that anxiety is a problem for some of our patients. While our practice is a serene and safe place, we try to accommodate the needs of all our patients, including those who are fearful of receiving dental treatment. To help combat uneasiness and anxiety, we offer sedation dentistry services. Sedation dentistry provides peace of mind by preventing the chemical reactions that lead to feelings of panic and worry. To help ease our guests’ minds, we may administer nitrous oxide gas through a comfortable nasal mask or sedatives via IV or oral tablets. Depending on a patient’s needs and the nature of treatment, the type of sedation we recommend can vary.
Receiving regular dental checkups is an integral part of maintaining or establishing good oral health. Dentists are trained to look for early signs of a number of oral health conditions and other issues that may affect general wellness. Many people are surprised to learn that oral checkups are incredibly thorough. A dentist will look for signs of everything from untimely tooth wear (which can indicate stress and bruxism) to oral cancer.
Regular visits to the dentist can save a patient time and money. For instance, visiting our practice twice a year gives our team an opportunity to detect dental caries in their earliest stages. Early detection means that patients can receive very conservative and cost effective restorations. Waiting too late to fill a cavity means that the cavity will deepen, thus affecting more of the tooth and requiring a larger restoration such as an onlay or crown.
Brushing and flossing is essential to establishing a good foundation of oral health. You should brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day. Ideally, you should brush for about two minutes each time. Be sure to brush in soft, circular motions on teeth and along the gums. As for flossing, patients should floss once a day, preferably at night. Flossing is important for cleaning between teeth and removing debris from the gums. We recommend using ADA approved oral hygiene products such as floss, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.
In addition to having routine checkups and committing to a thorough oral hygiene routine, dental cleanings are necessary to control plaque and tartar buildup. Patients should have two cleanings per year, every six months. A dental cleaning is the only way to remove tartar accumulation. Having regular cleanings can help prevent periodontal disease and dental caries.
Sedation dentistry is a way to help patients with dental phobias or clinical fears relax during treatment. Using sedative medication is useful for long and complex treatment as well because it helps patients stay still during procedures. Sedation dentistry can ensure that even the most fearful enjoy a positive and comfortable experience.
